What is Salvation?
Salvation is being rescued, saved, or delivered from something that usually is bad like danger, destruction, or death. In spiritual reality people are in danger of eternal death and destruction because of sin. The bible calls this judgment – that is, when we are treated according to our sin. Salvation is being saved from judgment.
We see themes and traces of salvation in everyday life. It’s in television, books, and the little things of life and especially in our epic and awesome movies. Remember these movies: “The Golden Child” from the 1980’s, “The Matrix,” “Superman,” “12 Monkeys,” “Independence Day,” “Terminator 1, 2, & 3,” “Tombstone,” “Silverado,” “Untouchables,” “The Lion King,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Braveheart,” “Batman,” and others. All of these
movies, which represent different movie genres, are driven by a sense for salvation. There is a hope for the salvation of the world or universe from death and destruction (Matrix, Independence Day, Terminator, Star Wars) or for a group of people like a town or other population to be saved or delivered from injustice (Silverado, Lion King, Batman, Saving Private Ryan). Our world is interested in salvation.
Also a theme we see in these movies is danger, doom, and its impending destruction and death which creates the need for salvation and the need for a savior (one who brings salvation). The bible shows us that because of our sin, the only thing we deserve is death and hell no matter what good we may have done. When we are dead we will stand before God.
Romans 14:10,12
“For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat…So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.”
Scripture says that God will judge according to our sin and unfortunately our sin merits death and hell.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin are death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We are in need of a savior. Christ Jesus is more than Superman, William Wallace, Elliot Ness, and every other movie savior including the valiant Aragorn, King of Gondor of “Lord of the Rings.” Christ Jesus is our only savior and only hope of escaping God’s judgment and justice against the sin of those who have dishonored and neglected Him. However those who believe in the Lord Jesus as Savior and God will live forever in heaven and will live the life God has for them on earth.
Romans 10:9
That if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
